Dear Esteemed Leaders / Thinkers / Creators,
Thank you for your interest in speaking at TEDxGeorgetown. While searching for some of the most esteemed leaders and citizens of our community and the world, our committee was mesmerized by your story. In spirit of the TED mission of spreading ideas worth spreading, it would be our honor for professional guest speakers, such as yourself, to attend our event and play a role in educating and inspiring a community of aspiring global leaders.

This year, TEDxGeorgetown will be taking place remotely on November 14th, 2020. The decision to move our conference online came after careful deliberation to ensure the health and safety of speakers and attendees. We invite you to share how you have taken the potential of an idle idea and transformed it into tangible success through determination, persistence, and leadership.

WHAT IS TED? WHAT IS TEDx?

TED is a global nonprofit organization with a mission focusing on “Ideas Worth Spreading”. TED invites some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers to share what they are passionate about with a global community. While TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design—three broad subject areas that are collectively shaping our world —the TED conference encompasses important research and ideas from all disciplines.

First held in 1984 as a small conference, the TED conference which is held annually in Vancouver, BC, Canada now draws thousands of attendees. Over the span of a week, 50+ speakers cover a broad spectrum of topics from science and business, to politics, arts, and global issues. As attendees and speakers from vastly different fields engage with the immersive and educational environment, they can draw inspiration from unlikely places and have cross-industry conversations. The result? Unexpected connections. Extraordinary insights. Powerful inspiration. This is the magic of TED.
Today, TED’s online platform is a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers. With 2,000+ talks from past conferences now freely available online at TED.com, a community of curious souls is able to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.

Created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading,” TEDx brings the spirit of TED to local communities around the globe through TEDx events. These events are organized by passionate individuals seeking to share the latest research in their local areas that spark conversations in their communities. More than 3000 events are now held annually.
TEDxGEORGETOWN

Georgetown University seeks to provide a platform for students and regional leaders to express their opinions on global phenomena, bring forth innovative ideas, and acquire knowledge of pertinent worldly issues.

Now in its tenth year, TEDxGeorgetown has grown to a featured campus event and provides very meaningful experiences for our community and city. TEDxGeorgetown is supported by John DeGioia in the Georgetown University President’s Office.
RIPPLES : IT STARTS WITH A DROP
A single drop of water in an otherwise still sea has the ability to create ripples seen remarkably far away from the source. Movement-makers, truth-seekers, scientists, and innovators take on the brave responsibility of acting as that drop. Their groundbreaking activism, leadership, and research are prime examples of how to effectively create positive change within a community and around the world. The activists and leaders have created the tides of change, the artists, scientists and writers have distilled the truth, and the inventors, creators and trendsetters have served to transcending the currents of progress; yet, despite the different means, they all have created massive ripples.

Creating Tides of Change
The tides of social change begin with a lone drop; one person’s inspiration to create local change can eventually be felt on the other side of the world. While mass inequality, prejudice, and fear have risen to the forefront of communities, these brave voices have become even more important. Activist led grassroots movements, initially in order to effect local change, have become catalysts for national conversation and action to uproot societal issues.

Filtering + Distilling Truth
Uncovering and exposing hidden and disguised information is never easy. This pressure is only amplified when one's work goes against powerful institutions and leaders. However, these artists, scientists, and journalists do this every day. These distillers of truth dive deep, alone into uncharted waters. Through various platforms they are able to bring attention to the realities of our society that many of us are blind to.

Transcending Currents of Progress
Not one single drop is exactly the same. Therefore, innovators and groundbreaking thinkers are imperative to transcend the currents of progress. These brilliant minds are the scientists, inventors, executives and trendsetters in our communities. From pushing the barriers of technology to finding new ways to harness science, they have created and invented in fields few others dared to even approach. They’ve brought new perspectives that have completely altered what we believed possible. Their work has unveiled new paths for human progress and shows the immense value of creative and diverse thought.

Imagine fascinating and engaging speakers from across the nation and world coming together for one day to share their passions and to discuss their visions for the world. The DC community is home to ground-breaking research, extraordinary ideas, and remarkable leaders in all areas of expertise. TEDxGeorgetown looks forward to bringing together individuals from outside and inside this community to showcase these brilliant ideas and enable them to be put into action.

We are committed to creating an event where participants are challenged to communicate their passions in an exciting and engaging dialogue. We are working hard to find speakers who can expose participants to a wide spectrum of topics and ideas, from social movements, to uncovered truths, to innovative technologies. Our goal is for all participants to leave the conference empowered to effect positive change in our communities.

At TEDxGeorgetown, speakers will not only give inspiring talks, but will also have the opportunity to discuss their ideas. We are here to support those who are chosen and make sure they are ready for the challenge. With a combination of virtual talks and live Q&A discussions, the format of the conference will allow speakers and attendees to digest and debate the talks and encourage the exchange of ideas
amongst all participants.
